Growing Instructions

Days to Maturity: 60-70 days from transplanting

Planting Season: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to 15°C+ (late May to early June in most regions).

Soil Preparation: Tiny Tim thrives in rich, well-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure. For container growing, use rich potting soil amended with compost. Space plants 12-18 inches apart in garden beds.

Sowing Instructions: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with seed-starting mix. Keep soil moist and warm (21-27°C) until germination (7-14 days). Transplant to individual pots when seedlings have 2-3 true leaves. Grow in bright light or under grow lights. Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors; expose to outdoor conditions for increasing periods over 7-10 days.

Container Growing: Use a pot at least 5 gallons in size. Larger pots retain moisture longer and provide more root space. Fill with rich potting soil amended with compost. Place in the sunniest location available (south-facing balcony, sunny patio, or windowsill with 8+ hours of direct sun daily).

Sun & Water: Full sun (8+ hours daily). Tiny Tim is a sun-worshipper that needs maximum light for abundant production. Water deeply and consistently. Container soil dries out faster than garden beds, especially in summer heat. Water when the top inch feels dry. Water at the base of plants, avoiding wetting leaves (reduces disease pressure). Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Care & Maintenance: Tiny Tim is determinate. It grows to a set height (12-18 inches), sets fruit in a concentrated period, and requires no pruning or support. The self-supporting structure means you can plant and forget with no staking, tying, or complicated support systems.

Feed every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer or compost tea once fruiting begins. Container plants need regular feeding because nutrients leach out with watering.

Watch for common tomato pests and diseases. Remove lower leaves as plants grow to improve air circulation and reduce disease.

Harvest: Begin harvesting when fruits are fully colored (bright red) and slightly soft to gentle pressure (60-70 days from transplanting). Cherry tomatoes ripen continuously, so you’ll harvest every few days during peak season. The more you harvest, the more the plant produces. Handle gently, as small fruits can split if squeezed.

Storage: Store at room temperature; never in the refrigerator (cold temperatures destroy flavour compounds and create a mealy texture). Use within a few days of harvest for peak flavour. Tiny Tim’s abundant production means you’ll have fresh tomatoes for months.

Canadian Climate Notes

Tiny Tim’s determinate habit is perfect for Canadian gardens; it produces most fruit in a concentrated period rather than continuously, meaning all fruit ripens before frost. You get a focused harvest rather than a trickle of fruit over months.

Start seeds 6-8 weeks before transplant to maximize the growing season. In warmer regions (southern Ontario, southern British Columbia), Tiny Tim produces abundantly from mid-July through September. In cooler regions (Atlantic Canada, the Prairies, northern areas), the harvest window may be shorter. Still, Tiny Tim tolerates cool weather reasonably well and continues producing until hard frost.

Culinary Notes

Tiny Tim tomatoes offer sweet, balanced, complex flavour. It has an authentic cherry tomato taste that makes you close your eyes with each bite. The small size (about 1 inch) is perfect for snacking, and the abundance means you’ll have plenty for fresh eating and preserving.

Excellent fresh in:

  • Snacking: Pop them in your mouth like candy—the skin bursts, juice runs, flavour hits
  • Salads: Whole or halved, adding bursts of flavour without overwhelming delicate greens
  • Roasted: Halve, toss with olive oil and salt, roast at 400°F until caramelized—sweetness becomes almost honeyed.
  • Skewers: Thread whole tomatoes with fresh mozzarella, basil, and olives for simple appetizers
  • Shared with children: Perfect size for small hands, sweet flavour for young palates. It teaches the joy of growing food.

Also excellent for preserving: roasted and frozen, or made into simple tomato jam. The abundant production (50-100+ fruits per plant) means you’ll have plenty for fresh eating and preserving.

This is the tomato that brought joy to apartment dwellers, to people with only a balcony or sunny windowsill, to children learning that you can grow food. This is the tomato that proved gardening is possible for everyone. Rich in vitamins A and C, lycopene, potassium, and folate.

Hardiness Zones

3-11 (grown as warm-season annual; frost-sensitive but productive even in short seasons)

Seed Saving

Tomatoes are largely self-pollinating with minimal cross-pollination (typically less than 5%), making them excellent for seed saving. Select the best fruits from your healthiest, most productive plants—perfectly ripe fruits, with outstanding flavour and form.

Cut fruits in half, squeeze seeds and gel into a jar or bowl, add a little water, and ferment for 2-4 days at room temperature (fermentation removes the gel coating that inhibits germination and kills some seed-borne diseases). When fermentation is complete (bubbles form on the surface and the mixture smells unpleasant), add water, stir, and let it settle. Viable seeds sink, dead seeds and pulp float. Pour off the floating material, rinse the seeds thoroughly, and spread them on screens or plates to dry completely (1-2 weeks).

Store dried seeds in a cool, dry place. Tomato seeds remain viable for 4-6 years.
