A Mysterious Treasure, Wrapped in Papery Secrets

Ground Cherry is a unique relative of the tomato, native to Central and South America, and cultivated for thousands of years. This is not quite a tomato, though related. It’s something entirely its own. They are small, golden orbs wrapped in delicate papery husks, like tiny lanterns containing secrets. When you peel back the husk, you discover a golden cherry-sized fruit inside, sweet and complex, with a flavour that hints at tropical fruit, pineapple, and something wild and wonderful.

Plants are sprawling and indeterminate (2-3 feet tall, sometimes taller), producing fruit continuously from mid-summer until frost. The flavour is extraordinary—sweet with subtle tartness, notes of pineapple and tropical fruit, and complexity that comes from an ancient, mysterious fruit.

A single plant produces 50-100+ fruits across the season, ripening continuously. When fully ripe, fruits often fall to the ground (hence “ground cherry”), ready to harvest. The papery husk protects the fruit, allows it to ripen fully, and enables extended storage.

Growing Instructions

Days to Maturity: 70-80 days from transplanting

Planting Season: Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Transplant outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed to 15°C+ (late May to early June in most regions). Ground cherries’ continuous production means they benefit from the longest possible growing season.

Soil Preparation: Ground cherry thrives in rich, well-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure. Space plants 18-24 inches apart to accommodate sprawling growth and ensure good air circulation.

Sowing Instructions: Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with seed-starting mix. Keep soil moist and warm (21-27°C) until germination (7-14 days). Transplant to individual pots when seedlings have 2-3 true leaves. Grow in bright light or under grow lights. Harden off gradually before transplanting outdoors and expose to outdoor conditions for increasing periods over 7-10 days.

Sun & Water: Full sun (8+ hours daily). Ground cherries need full sunlight for abundant production and the development of sweet flavour. Water deeply and consistently, as these plants need even, regular moisture for best fruit development. Water at the base of plants, avoiding wetting leaves (reduces disease pressure). Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Care & Maintenance: Ground cherry is indeterminate. Plants sprawl and spread naturally. You can provide light support (stakes or light caging) to keep fruits off the ground and improve air circulation, but it’s not strictly necessary. Many gardeners let them sprawl naturally.

Feed every 2-3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer or compost tea once fruiting begins. Ground cherries are moderate feeders and don’t need excessive fertilization.

Watch for common pests and diseases. Remove lower leaves as plants grow to improve air circulation.

Harvest: Harvest fruits when the husk feels papery, and the fruit inside feels soft (70-80 days from transplanting, then continuously until frost). You can pick directly from the plant or let them fall to the ground and collect them. The fruits that have fallen are fully ripe and ready to eat. The papery husk protects fallen fruits and keeps them clean.

Storage: Store unhusked fruits at room temperature for 2-3 weeks. The protective husk enables extended storage. Remove husks just before eating. Ground cherries’ continuous production means you’ll have fresh fruit for months.

Canadian Climate Notes

Ground cherry thrives in Canadian summers with continuous production throughout the season. The indeterminate habit means you’ll harvest fresh fruits from mid-summer through fall rather than all at once.

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost to maximize the growing season. In warmer regions (southern Ontario, southern British Columbia), ground cherry produces abundantly from mid-July through September, sometimes into October. In cooler regions (Atlantic Canada, the Prairies, northern areas), the harvest window may be shorter. Start seeds early, use black plastic mulch to warm the soil, and consider row covers to protect young plants and extend the season.

Ground cherry tolerates cool weather reasonably well for a tropical-origin fruit and continues to produce until a hard frost. The papery husk protects the fruit, allowing it to ripen fully even in cooler conditions: a significant advantage in Canadian gardens.

Ground cherry is ideal for:

  • Continuous harvest: Fresh fruits from mid-summer until frost
  • Small gardens: Compact footprint with sprawling habit
  • Container gardening: Perfect for 3-5 gallon pots
  • Unique flavours: Tropical notes unlike any other garden fruit
  • Easy harvesting: Ripe fruits fall to the ground for collection

Culinary Notes

Ground cherry fruits offer extraordinary flavour. They are sweet with subtle tartness, notes of pineapple and tropical fruit, and complexity unlike anything else, not quite like a tomato, not quite like a cherry, but something unique.

Excellent for:

  • Fresh eating: Pop them in your mouth whole or peel back the husk for sweet, complex, tropical flavour
  • Salads: Halved ground cherries add sweet, tropical notes to green, fruit, or grain salads
  • Desserts: Pies, tarts, cobblers, crisps
  • Jams and preserves: Natural pectin means jam sets well; extraordinary sweet flavour with subtle tartness
  • Cocktails: Perfect for muddling or as a garnish
  • Dried: Dehydrate for sweet, chewy snacks or trail mix
  • Sauces: Ground cherry sauce pairs beautifully with desserts or savoury dishes
  • Photography: The golden colour and delicate husks are visually stunning. They’re a feast for the eyes and palate.

The papery husk is edible and adds subtle texture, or peel it back to enjoy just the fruit. Rich in vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and beneficial compounds.

Hardiness Zones

3-11 (grown as warm-season annual; frost-sensitive but productive even in short seasons)

Seed Saving

Ground cherries are largely self-pollinating with minimal cross-pollination, making them excellent for seed saving. Select the best fruits from your healthiest, most productive plants.

Allow fruit to fully ripen on the plant until the husk feels completely papery and the fruit inside is very soft (you can also allow fruits to fall to the ground and ripen further before harvesting). Cut open ripe fruit and scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl. Add a little water and let ferment for 2-4 days at room temperature (fermentation removes the gel coating that inhibits germination).

When fermentation is complete, add water, stir, and let settle. Viable seeds sink, dead seeds and pulp float. Pour off the floating material, rinse the seeds thoroughly, and spread them on screens or plates to dry completely (1-2 weeks).

Store dried seeds in a cool, dry place. Ground cherry seeds remain viable for 3-4 years. Each fruit contains 100-200+ seeds.
